Building the car park…

Match Heist, our match-3 heist game, is coming soon to mobile — see what we’re building.

How to play Magic Sort

The car park is full and nobody parked by colour. Tap a bay and the cars at its front lift, ready to move; tap a second bay to park them there. You can only park into an empty bay or onto the same colour, and a bay holds four cars — that is every rule in the game.

What lifts is the front car plus every car of the same colour directly behind it, so a run of three travels on one tap. Get all four cars of a colour into one bay and it locks shut with a tick — done, out of your way, one less thing to hold in your head. Lock every colour and the level is won.

From level 21 some cars arrive under covers, showing a question mark instead of a colour. A cover is hidden information and nothing more: as soon as a covered car reaches the front of its bay it is uncovered, and it moves exactly like any other car. Every level is finishable whatever is underneath — the game will not deal you a board it cannot prove it can finish.

There is no timer and no move limit. Undo is unlimited, Hint gives you three pointers a level, and Bay opens one extra empty bay twice a level when a board gets too tight to breathe.

Tips

  • Empty bays are the whole game. Anything can go into one, so an empty bay is a move you have not spent yet. Filling your last one with a colour you are not about to finish is how most boards die.
  • Look for the colour that is nearly home. Three of a colour already stacked together is a bay that wants one more car. Finishing it locks four cars away and hands you the room to work in.
  • Move runs, not cars. If two of a colour are already sitting together at the front of a bay, moving them costs one tap instead of two — and splitting them up to move them separately usually costs you a bay.
  • Dig with a plan. Before you unload a bay to reach what is underneath, check where the cars on top are going to live. Somewhere is not an answer; a named bay is.
  • Treat covered cars as a cost, not a gamble. You cannot know what is under a cover, so do not commit your last empty bay to finding out. Uncover early, while you still have room to be wrong.
  • Undo is free — use it early. There is no penalty and no timer, so the moment a board feels tight, walk it back a few moves rather than nursing it to a dead end.

Magic Sort FAQ

Is Magic Sort free to play?

Yes. Magic Sort is completely free to play in your browser — there is no download, no install and no signup. Open the page and start tapping bays.

How do I move a car?

Tap a bay and the cars at its front lift up, ready to go. Tap a second bay to park them there. The cars that lift are the front car plus any cars of the same colour directly behind it, so a run of three moves in one tap rather than three.

Where am I allowed to park?

Into an empty bay, or into a bay whose front car is already the same colour. That is the whole rule. A bay only holds four cars, so if there is only room for two of the three you lifted, two go and the third stays where it was.

How do I finish a bay?

Get all four cars of one colour into the same bay. It locks shut with a tick and those cars are done — you cannot move them again and you no longer have to think about them. Finish every colour and the level is won.

What are the covered cars with a question mark?

Later levels park some cars under covers so you cannot see their colour. A cover is hidden information, never an extra rule: the moment a covered car reaches the front of its bay it is uncovered, and it can always be driven exactly as far as an uncovered one. Every level is finishable whatever is under the covers.

Can I get stuck?

Yes — filling your last empty bay with the wrong colour can strand a board that was fine a move ago. There is no timer and no move limit, undo goes back as far as you like, and restart is always there. If a hint tells you it cannot find a way home, that is your cue to undo.

What do the four buttons do?

Undo takes back your last move and you get as many as you want. Hint lights up a move that is on a winning line, and you get three per level. Bay opens one more empty bay, and you get two per level — it makes a tight board much easier, so spend them late. Restart deals the same level again from the beginning.

Is every level actually solvable?

Yes, and it is checked rather than assumed. Levels are built from the level number rather than shipped as a file, and a board is only handed to you once a solver has played it through to a finish. The whole set is re-checked automatically the same way before it ships.

How many levels are there?

240 graded levels, running from three colours and a lot of spare room up to ten colours, covered cars and barely any. After level 240 the car park keeps dealing fresh levels at full difficulty, so it does not run out.

Does my progress save?

Yes. The levels you have finished are stored in your browser, so you can close the tab and pick up where you left off. Progress is per browser and per device — it is not tied to an account, so clearing your browser data will reset it.

Can I play if I am colour blind?

Yes. Every colour also carries its own shape on the car roof — a circle, a triangle, a square, a diamond, a star and so on — so no two cars in a level are told apart by colour alone.

Does Magic Sort work on phones?

Yes. Magic Sort runs in any modern browser on phones, tablets and desktops, and the board is built for tapping as well as clicking. It measures the space it has been given and lays the bays out to fit, so a twelve-bay level is playable on a phone. Nothing to install.

Car Sort is the same car park with the driving taken out of your hands: every bay opens onto one ring road, and a tap sends a run of cars off to find the bay they belong in by themselves. If you would rather steer, Car Match drives them out of a packed yard three of a colour at a time, across 483 levels. For something slower there is Travel Tiles, our untimed triple-match tile game, and Getaway Garage slides every vehicle in the garage with one swipe. All free, all in your browser.
