How to play Smash & Grab

Smash & Grab is a free tap-to-throw smash game in 3D that runs in this page. A market stall is piled with tins, crates and worse, and Sir Wagsworth stands at the bottom of the screen with a bucket of balls. Tap or click anywhere and he throws one at that exact spot. He queues up to three throws, so tap again while the first ball is still in the air.

The job is to get everything off the table. Anything that goes over the edge counts as nicked. Glass jars shatter if you hit them hard enough, which counts too. TNT lights when anything knocks it hard (a ball, a falling tin, another blast) and goes off a moment later, throwing everything nearby across the stall. Gold bars are heavy and need a square hit, and ice blocks slide a long way on very little. Some stalls have shelves and posts nailed down; those stay, and whatever sits on them does not.

Later stalls add three twists. A bucket of tennis balls is loot like anything else, and knocking it off the table gives you two more throws, which count towards stars like any ball you never used. A plunger in a wooden box is nailed down and does not need clearing: hit it with a ball, or land something heavy on it, and every stick of TNT on the stall goes off, one after another, biggest bang last. And the red alarm stays where it is. It does not need clearing either, but if a ball reaches it before that ball has hit any loot, or anything knocks it off the table, the bell goes and the level is over on the spot.

Each level gives you a fixed number of balls. Clear the table before they run out and you win; run out with anything still on it and you try again. Stars come from the balls you have left, so a clean first throw into the base of a pyramid is worth more than ten into the top of it.

Tips

  • Hit the feet. A stack falls when its bottom row moves. Throws at the top of a pyramid knock off one can each; throws at the bottom bring the lot down.
  • Aim at what you can see. The ball goes to the first thing under your finger. If something in front hides your target, either clear the front first or aim at the visible edge.
  • Push towards the nearest edge. Things near the sides of the table only need a nudge outwards. Hitting them from the middle of the stall sends them the long way.
  • Let the TNT do the work. One ball lights a fuse, and the blast often clears more than three throws would. Wait for it before spending another ball.
  • Give the alarm a wide berth. A ball that has already hit some loot is only debris, and a nudge from debris is fine. A clean throw into it is not, and neither is anything that shoves it off the edge, blast or ball. Leave loot that is half hidden behind it for later, and think about which way the TNT will push before you light anything.
  • Save the plunger. It fires every stick of TNT at once, so it is worth most when the stall is still full. Pressing it after the first box has already gone wastes half the show.
  • Get the spare balls early. A bucket knocked off with your first throw pays for itself straight away. Leave it till last and it only makes the stars look better.
  • Watch for slow movers. A tin teetering on the edge sometimes falls on its own. If the table is nearly clear, give it a second before you throw again.

Smash & Grab FAQ

Is Smash & Grab free to play?

Yes. Smash & Grab is free in your browser with no download, no install and no signup. Open the page and start throwing.

How do I play Smash & Grab?

Tap or click anywhere on the stall and Sir Wagsworth throws a ball from the bottom of the screen at that exact spot. Knock everything off the table before you run out of balls. Tins, crates, bricks and gold bars have to leave the table; glass jars also count once they shatter, and TNT clears whatever it throws off with it.

How do stars work?

Stars come from the balls you have left when the table is clear. Clearing a level earns one star, and each level sets how many spare balls earn the second and third. The win card tells you how many the third star needs.

How many levels are there?

30 hand-built levels across three stalls: a rooftop market at golden hour, a harbour at night and an ice vault in the mountains. New things arrive every few levels: bricks, glass jars, shelves, gold bars, buckets of spare balls, planks, TNT, an alarm you must not touch, a detonator plunger, ice blocks and, on the last few levels, a prize gem that has to go too.

Is every level possible?

Yes. Before release, a script plays all 30 levels with the same physics code as the game, throwing only at spots a player could tap, and checks that each one can be cleared with enough balls to spare for three stars, both in the tall phone view and the wider desktop view.

Why did my ball miss?

The ball flies at the first thing under your finger. If a crate in front hides the tin you meant, the crate gets the ball. Tapping empty sky sends the ball through the middle of the stall at that height, which is usually over everything. Aim at the part of an object you can actually see, and low on a stack rather than the top.

Does my progress save?

Yes. Unlocked levels and your best stars are stored in your browser, so you can close the tab and carry on later. Progress is per browser and per device, so clearing your browser data resets it.

Does Smash & Grab work on phones?

Yes. It runs in modern browsers on phones, tablets and desktops, and a tap anywhere on the stall throws. On a phone the view is portrait and the whole table fits on screen. On a computer the space bar throws at the mouse pointer and R restarts the level.

Is there a mobile app?

Smash & Grab itself is a browser game. It comes from Brightpoint Studios, the makers of Match Heist, our 3D car match puzzle for iOS and Android, which has the same crew and a lot more levels.

The other physics games: Vault Smash is the 2D cousin, a cannon that knocks loot off its plinths with tennis balls. Loot Drop has you cut ropes so a diamond lands in the getaway van, Van Stacker asks you to drop loot off a crane and make it stay in the van, and Bath Time is a dig-and-water puzzle where you clear a path for the water to reach the tub. All of them are on the physics games page.

If you would rather sort traffic than throw things at it, Car Parking asks you to slide parked cars aside and drive the gold one out, and Car Match clears cars three of a colour at a time. Travel Tiles is our untimed triple-match tile game.
