Car Match

Drive cars out of the yard and park three of a colour together to clear them — 483 levels, free in your browser, no download.

Match Heist, our match-3 heist game, is coming soon to mobile — see what we’re building.

How to play Car Match

The yard is packed with cars, and every one of them wants out. Tap a car that has a clear road to an exit and it drives off the board and parks in the lot below — seven slots wide. A car with something in the way cannot move at all, so the order you send them out in is the whole puzzle: each car that leaves opens the road for the ones stuck behind it.

Matches happen in the lot, not in the yard. The moment three cars of the same colour are parked together they clear and give their slots back. Two is never enough, so every car you send out is a promise to find two more like it. Clear the yard completely and the level is done; fill all seven slots with cars that cannot make a set of three and the run is over.

Later levels hide cars rather than just blocking them. Mystery boxes and bigger crates have cars locked inside and open only by being bumped — and a bump lands only when a car that was parked directly beside the box drives away. Tunnels hold a queue of cars underground: clear the car in the tunnel mouth and the next one surfaces in its place. There is no timer and no move limit across all 483 levels, which run from Easy up to Super Hard.

Tips

  • Read the roads before the colours. A colour you have two of is useless if the third car is walled in. Check what can actually reach an exit this turn, then decide.
  • Send cars out in threes. If all three of a colour have a clear road, take them back to back — they clear straight away and cost you no lasting slots.
  • Keep two or three slots spare. Runs end when the lot jams, not when the yard is hard. Cash in a set before you go digging into a corner you have not opened yet.
  • Bump boxes on purpose. Because only a car that starts right next to a box deals a hit, opening one is something you plan: park cars along its edges first, then drive them off. Do it before the lot is tight, since whatever is inside comes out whether you have room or not.
  • Treat a tunnel mouth as a queue, not a car. The yard is not as empty as it looks while a tunnel still has cars in it. Count the tunnels before you assume you are two moves from finishing.
  • Restart early on the hard ones. There is no penalty and no timer. If the first few cars out have not lined up anything, a fresh look is usually quicker than nursing a full lot.

Car Match FAQ

Is Car Match free to play?

Yes. Car Match is completely free to play in your browser — there is no download, no install and no signup. Open the page and start tapping cars.

How does a car get out of the yard?

Tap a car that has a clear road to an exit and it drives out to the parking lot. A car with something in the way — another car, a box, a crate — cannot move, so half the puzzle is working out which cars to send out first to open the road for the ones behind them.

How do the matches work, and how do I lose?

Cars that leave the yard park in a lot with seven slots. As soon as three cars of the same colour are parked together they clear and hand their slots back. Pairs are not enough — you always need three of a colour. If all seven slots fill with cars that cannot make a set of three, the run is over and you can retry the level. Clear every car out of the yard before that happens and the level is won.

How do I open the boxes and crates?

Mystery boxes and large crates hide cars inside, and they only open by being bumped. A hit lands when a car that was parked directly beside the box — up, down, left or right, never diagonally — drives away. Cars parked further off do nothing, so opening a box means deliberately parking cars next to it and then sending them out. Large crates are the same idea, but they take more bumps before they break open.

What are the tunnels for?

A tunnel holds a queue of cars underground. You can only see the car sitting in the tunnel mouth; as soon as that one drives off, the next car in the queue surfaces in its place. Tunnels are where the levels hide their surprises, so a yard that looks nearly clear can still have a run of cars waiting under it.

Is Car Match timed?

No. There is no clock and no move limit, so you can take as long as you like over each tap. The pressure comes from the seven parking slots, not from a timer. There are 483 levels in all, hand-built and graded from Easy up to Super Hard.

Does my progress save?

Yes. The levels you have finished are stored in your browser, so you can close the tab and pick up where you left off. Progress is per browser and per device — it is not tied to an account, so clearing your browser data will reset it.

Does Car Match work on phones?

Yes. Car Match runs in any modern browser on phones, tablets and desktops, and the board is built for tapping as well as clicking. Nothing to install.
